CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
Due Date: SEPTEMBER 10, 2025
The Shevchenko Scientific Society in the United States, in partnership with the American Association for Ukrainian Studies and Razom for Ukraine, is pleased to announce a call for applications from early-career scholars. PhD candidates studying at US universities and post-doctoral fellows who received their PhD degrees within the past three years are invited to apply for participation in an interdisciplinary workshop in Ukrainian Studies. Applicants engaged in a wide range of approaches and subfields are welcome to apply. Topics include, but are not limited to, civil society, culture, economic development, gender, historical memory, humanitarian aid, international relations, migration, and war.
The in-person workshop will be held in New York City on October 31 – November 1, 2025, which will provide participants with an opportunity to attend some events at the Ukrainian Cultural Festival. Participants will be asked to pre-circulate an article-length paper two weeks prior to the workshop. Senior scholars will comment on the pre-circulated work. Workshop participants are also expected to read one another’s papers before the event to foster lively discussion.
Eligible Participants
Applications are open to PhD candidates, as well as post-doctoral fellows and other early-career scholars who received their PhDs within the past 3 years in the humanities or social sciences and are currently based in the United States.
How to Apply
Interested applicants should complete the online form by September 10, 2025. The application form includes the submission of an abstract (approximately 300 words) and a biographical statement (maximum of 200 words). Selected participants will be notified by September 17.
Travel Grants
Workshop participants will receive travel grants, if necessary, to cover economy airfare and a two-night stay at a hotel.
Those applicants who are selected for participation in the workshop will receive priority if they apply to Razom for Ukraine for a travel grant to participate in the 2026 ASEEES annual convention, to be held in Chicago on November 12-15, 2026. Workshop papers will be considered for publication in a special issue of a peer-reviewed journal in Ukrainian Studies.
