The Shevchenko Scientific Society in the U.S. (NTSh-A) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2026 Summer Language Grant. Out of 19 applications, five grants have been awarded to four outstanding undergraduate and graduate students and one faculty member who are committed to deepening their knowledge of the Ukrainian language. Each grant includes financial support toward tuition in a Ukrainian language program this summer.
The recipients are:
Elizabeth Crim is a first-year PhD student at Stanford University in Slavic Languages and Literatures. Her research focuses on contemporary Ukrainian art and Eastern European Avant-Garde traditions.
Steven Jug is a historian with a dual appointment at Baylor University in History and Modern Languages. He has been developing new courses on Ukrainian history since 2022.
William Layton is a master’s student in Russian, East European, and Central Asian Studies at Harvard’s Davis Center. His research focuses on Ukrainian national identity in Soviet Ukraine following the death of Stalin in 1953. This summer he will continue his study of the Ukrainian language at the Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute.
Stuart McAdams is a sophomore and Army ROTC cadet at the University of Pittsburgh. He will attend the Harvard Ukrainian Summer Institute this summer to study Ukrainian language, politics, and society.
Samantha Sharp is a PhD candidate in Comparative Literature at Binghamton University. Her dissertation compares avant-garde poets writing in Slavic languages, including Ukrainian.
