Thanks to a grant from the Documentary Heritage Program, a statewide grant program administered by the New York State Archives, the Shevchenko Scientific Society recently completed processing the papers of the actor William Shust. Shust played roles on Broadway, Off-Broadway, television, and film, and was a lifelong member of the Ukrainian American community in New York City. Born in New York City to Ukrainian immigrant parents, he obtained his MFA in Theatre in 1954, which launched a career as an actor that lasted for over six decades.

This talk by the Shevchenko Scientific Society’s archives consultant Michael Andrec and DHP processing archivist Leila Jutton will provide an overview of Shust, the collection, and the surprises therein, as well as provide a picture of the archival labor that goes into making collections like this accessible to and usable by researchers.

Memorial Evening for Yuriy Tarnawsky
Presenter: Dr. Yana Prymachenko (Columbia University)

September 26 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

For centuries, Moscow claimed the mantle of the Third Rome, systematically erasing Kyiv’s role as the original heir to Byzantine civilization. This lecture reconstructs that long history of symbolic appropriation and traces how Ukraine – through monuments, military tradition, literature, and memory politics – is now reclaiming what was taken. The Russo-Ukrainian war is not only a war of territory; it is a war over who inherits the legacy of Byzantium.

Yana Prymachenko is a historian of Ukraine and Eastern Europe specializing in Soviet history, memory politics, propaganda, and Ukrainian cultural history. A Senior Research Scholar at the Institute of History of Ukraine (National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine), she was displaced by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and subsequently held visiting and teaching appointments at Princeton University. She is currently a Lecturer in the Department of Slavic Languages at Columbia University. She is the author and co-author of numerous books and over one hundred scholarly and journalistic publications in Ukrainian and English.

Moderator: Dr. Vitaly Chernetsky (Shevchenko Scientific Society/U of Kansas)
