Joint Statement on the Attack on the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

October 7, 2026

We condemn the September 28 Russian drone strike on the building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in central Kyiv. We mourn those killed, extend our condolences to their families and colleagues, and wish the injured a full recovery.

This daytime attack struck a civilian academic institution that has served Ukrainian research and scholarship for more than a century and that continues its work amid an ongoing full-scale war. We stand in solidarity with colleagues at the Academy and with scholars throughout Ukraine and globally whose work and safety remain under threat.

We call on learned societies, universities, and research institutions worldwide to condemn attacks on civilian academic and research institutions and to sustain support for scholarship and research. Open inquiry, reasoned debate, and the free pursuit of knowledge are foundations of any civil society.
