In Memoriam: Volodymyr Bazarko (1940-2024)

The Shevchenko Scientific Society in the U.S. mourns the loss of Dr. Volodymyr Orest Bazarko, a distinguished scholar, dedicated public servant, and a treasured member of the Ukrainian community. Dr. Bazarko passed away on October 13, 2024.

Born on June 14, 1940, in the village of Mytsiv, Halychyna, Dr. Bazarko’s life was a testament to his unwavering commitment to his Ukrainian heritage and his pursuit of knowledge. He earned advanced degrees from prestigious institutions, including Pratt Institute, John Carroll University, and Marshall Law School.

Dr. Bazarko’s career was marked by exceptional accomplishments. He was an attorney, engineer, mathematician, research scientist, philanthropist, and teacher of math, real estate, and business law. He held positions at NASA’s Research Center and co-founded the law firm Bazarko, Futey & Oryshkewych.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Dr. Bazarko was deeply involved in the Ukrainian community. He was a president of the Philadelphia Chapter of The Shevchenko Scientific Society in the U.S. and a member of the Editorial Committee for the Encyclopedia of Ukrainian Diaspora. Additionally, he was a co-founder of the Ukrainian American Lawyers Association and served as the CEO of the Plast Oversight Board (HPR). Dr. Bazarko’s legacy extends to his philanthropic work. He established an endowment fund at Columbia University and a scholarship at Manor College, demonstrating his enduring commitment to education and the advancement of Ukrainian studies.
