The Shevchenko Scientific Society in the United States, in partnership with the American Association for Ukrainian Studies, Razom for Ukraine, and the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan, is pleased to announce a call for applications from early-career scholars to present their research at the Shevchenko Workshop in Ukrainian Studies, to be held at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor on October 25–26, 2026. Topics include, but are not limited to, civil society, culture, economic development, environment, gender, historical memory, humanitarian aid, international relations, migration, and war. Participants will be asked to pre-circulate an article-length paper two weeks prior to the workshop. Senior scholars will comment on the pre-circulated work. Workshop participants are also expected to read one another’s papers before the event to foster lively discussion.
Eligibility
This workshop invites applications from PhD students and other early-career scholars who received their PhDs not earlier than 2023. Scholars from a variety of disciplines—including but not limited to anthropology, arts, environmental studies, history, economics, law, literary and cultural studies, media studies, political science, and religious studies—are encouraged to apply.
How to Apply
Interested applicants should complete the online form by March 15, 2026. The application form includes the submission of an abstract (approximately 300 words) and a biographical statement (maximum of 200 words). Acceptance notifications will be sent out in April.
Travel Grants
There is no registration fee to participate in the workshop. The workshop organizers will cover meals on the day of the workshop (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and two nights of hotel accommodation for workshop participants. Some travel grants are available upon request. If you require travel support, please indicate this in your application and specify your departure location.
