The Shevchenko Scientific Society in the United States of America will award grants during 2017-2018 in the following categories: Research Grants, Conference Travel Grants, and Dissertation Research Grants. Grants for Conference/Project Planning will not be available during the 2017-2018 grants cycles.
Research Grants
The Shevchenko Scientific Society in the U.S. will award grants in 2017-2018 for research on a wide range of topics and issues related to Ukrainian Studies. While priorities are given to projects in the humanities and social sciences, proposals for research in other fields and disciplines are welcome if they will make important contributions to Ukrainian Studies.
Eligibility limitations/requirements
Research Grant awards are open to scholars of all countries, disciplines, and ethnicities. All research proposals will be judged on their scholarly merits, on the demonstrated experience and abilities of the applicant to carry out the proposed research, and on the nature of the contribution of the project to advancing scholarship on Ukraine-related issues and in Ukrainian Studies.
Incomplete applications or applications received after the submission deadline will not be considered; applicants have the option to resubmit their updated applications in the next grant cycle. Preference will be given to applications providing evidence of funds or application for funds for the project/activity from other sources. If the applicant had a prior Research Grant from the Shevchenko Scientific Society, at least one year must pass after the completion of the grant before the applicant is eligible to apply for another grant. In addition, a written final report about the grant must be submitted to the Grants Committee before another grant proposal can be considered.
Funding Limitations and Restrictions
Research Grants are intended to primarily support the processes of research, analysis, and writing. Awarded funds may be used to cover such research expenses as archival access; photocopying/duplication of research materials; supplies relevant to the research process; travel expenses related to research activities; meals and lodging during research trips away from one’s home; and general support expenses during periods of analysis and writing.
Individual grants are limited to a maximum amount of $5000, or $7,500 if there are two or more scholars supported by the grant.
Required application materials and deadline for submission
The following documents are required for application:
- Grant application form
- Curriculum vitae with selected publications and current research (if relevant)
- Essay identifying the objectives of the project, the scholarly context of the issue(s) addressed, the proposed research program, the expected contributions of the project to your field and to Ukrainian Studies, and planned outcomes of the project (i.e. publications, exhibitions, etc.)
- Detailed project schedule of work and project budget
- At least 2 (no more than 3) letters of support for the applicant and the proposed research project
Applications with all required documents in electronic format must be received by the Shevchenko Scientific Society in the U.S. by March 1, 2018 (grants@shevchenko.org). Final decisions will be made by June 2018 so that projects could commence as early as the summer or fall of 2018.
Conference Travel Grants
Conference Travel Grants support the applicant’s participation in scholarly conferences at which the applicant is presenting a paper or participating in a panel focused on issues related to Ukraine and Ukrainian Studies. Support funds are expected to cover primarily travel expenses of the applicant to and from the conference site from their home country.
Eligibility limitations/requirements
Applicants should hold at least an MA/MS degree in a field related to their topic of research and conference presentation. The topic of the proposed conference presentation should address important issues in Ukrainian Studies, or current or historical issues relevant to Ukraine and Ukrainians.

If the applicant had a prior Conference Travel Grant from the Shevchenko Scientific Society in the U.S., at least one year must pass after the completion of the grant before the applicant is eligible to apply for another grant. The maximum amount to be awarded for individual Conference Travel Grants is $1000. Funds should be used primarily for travel and lodging expenses. Preference will be given to applications providing evidence of funds or application for funds for other conference participation expenses from other sources.
Required application materials and deadline for submission
The following documents are required for application:

- Curriculum vitae with selected publications and current research (if relevant)
- Essay identifying the conference to be attended, its theme(s), the title of your presentation and name of the session/panel in which you will be participating; the scholarly context of the issue(s) addressed in your presentation, and any planned outcomes of your participation in the conference (i.e. publications, exhibitions, etc.)
- The paper or abstract of the paper to be presented and a copy of the conference program
- Detailed schedule and project budget.
- At least 2 (no more than 3) letters of support for the applicant and the proposed conference presentation.
- A letter of invitation to you from the conference organizers confirming your acceptance as a presenter in the conference.
Applications for Conference Travel Grants with all required documents in electronic format must be received by the Shevchenko Scientific Society in the U.S. (grants@shevchenko.org). by October 1, 2017 and March 1, 2018 for consideration and approval at the December 2017 and June 2018 meetings of the Society’s Board of Directors.
Dissertation Research Grants
Grants are available for dissertation research projects on issues related to Ukraine and Ukrainian Studies. Preference will we given to topics in the humanities and social sciences, but applications for research in other fields will be accepted and evaluated as to the relevance and importance of their contribution to Ukrainian Studies.
Eligibility limitations/requirements
Dissertation Research Grants are open to graduate students of all countries, disciplines, and ethnicities. Applicants must be currently enrolled in universities or research institutes as aspiranty for Kandydat Nauk degrees or candidates in Ph.D. programs. All proposals will be judged on their scholarly merits, on the nature of the contribution of the project to advancing scholarship on Ukraine-related issues and in Ukrainian Studies, and on the proven ability of the applicant to effectively execute the project.
Funding limitations and restrictions
The maximum amount of individual grant awards is $1000. Eligible expenses include travel to research sites, lodging, costs of access to research materials, duplication costs, etc. Funds awarded in support of dissertation research projects are not intended to cover general living expenses during the term of the project.

If the applicant had a prior Dissertation Research Grant from the Shevchenko Scientific Society in the U.S., at least one year must pass after the completion of the grant before the applicant is eligible to apply for another grant. - Essay identifying your dissertation topic; the scholarly context of the issue(s) addressed in your dissertation; a description of the research you propose to undertake, methods, theoretical underpinnings, etc., as well as a description of the sources/collections with which you propose to work; a discussion of how the research will advance your research objectives; anticipated contribution of your dissertation project.
- Detailed schedule of the research process and project budget, listing anticipated expenses.
- At least 2 (no more than 3) letters of support which address the importance and relevance of the applicant’s research project and the applicant’s ability to complete the research and dissertation.
