The Ukrainian Museum and the Shevchenko Scientific Society in the US are partnering to host a seminal event celebrating the Museum’s new exhibition Village to Modern.

The influence of Ukrainian folk art on the Ukrainian avant-garde in the early 20th century was transformative. With its vibrant colors, geometric patterns, and unique symbols, Ukrainian folk art played a significant role in shaping the development of new artistic movements and pushing the boundaries of artistic expression for innovative and groundbreaking works. Pioneering avant-garde artists such as Kazimir Malevich and Alexandra Exter were inspired by the authenticity of Ukrainian folk art, which had its creative roots in small villages across the country.

Join us for a daylong symposium with visual presentations by distinguished art historians, an exhibition walkthrough with the Museum’s director, and a roundtable discussion culminating with an audience Q&A. Our distinguished group of guest speakers include Dr. Myroslava Mudrak, Oksana Semenik, and Dr. Alisa Lozhkina. The program will be held throughout the day in both locations, the Shevchenko Scientific Society in the US and The Ukrainian Museum, with a light lunch at mid-day. The full schedule is provided below. This event will be held both in person and online (live stream), and tickets for both options are available on Eventbrite. For online ticket purchases, the exhibition walkthrough at the Museum is not included. The live stream link to the event will be sent via email from the Shevchenko Scientific Society in the US the day before the event.

Born into a family of Ukrainian Galician intellectuals, you were instilled from an early age with the core values of Galician patriots—those who championed the vision of a united and sovereign Ukraine. The upheavals of World War II profoundly reshaped the lives of countless Ukrainians, including your own family, who became part of the émigré community, choosing exile over accepting the Bolshevik occupation or the very idea of a Soviet Ukraine. You have movingly captured these experiences of displacement in your extraordinary memoir, Borders, Bombs, and … Two Right Shoes.Growing up abroad—first in Canada and later in the United States—you pursued your education with dedication while actively participating in Ukrainian organizations, most notably Plast. Your deepening interest in literature, and particularly in drama, led you to pursue Slavic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where you earned your doctorate and continued your scholarly research. This work resulted in an impressive body of academic contributions, including numerous articles, curated anthologies, and your influential monograph Text and Performance: Ukrainian Modern Drama. You served as the chief editor of the collections The Worlds of Taras Shevchenko (Volumes 1 and 2), and On the Ukrainian Orthography and Related Issues; for many years, you chaired the UVAN Committee on the Study of Volodymyr Vynnychenko’s Work. You also led the literature section of the journal Suchasnist, making significant editorial contributions. Among your most important achievements are the compilation of two landmark anthologies: The Twins Shall Meet Again: Anthology of Drama of the Ukrainian Diaspora and An Anthology of Modern Ukrainian Drama, published in both Ukrainian and English.Recognizing the importance of amplifying Ukrainian voices on the global stage, you translated and published the poetry of Vira Vovk, Vasyl Stus, Ihor Kalynets, and Ihor Rymaruk, the prose of Serhii Paradzhanov, and the dramatic works of Valeriy Shevchuk. Your efforts extended beyond creative literature; you are also widely respected for your translations of seminal works of literary criticism from English into Ukrainian.Perhaps the most impactful and enduring chapter of your scholarly career has been your leadership of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in the US. May 9, 2025Dr. Serhii Tereshchenko (University at Albany, State University of New York (SUNY)). Theory of Cultural Change in Yevhen Malaniuk's Poetry and ScholarshipAfter the Ukrainian National Republic was taken over in 1919, the army officer Yevhen Malaniuk, then 22 years old, moved to Poland. He lived there for twenty years until another world war forced him to move to Czechoslovakia, then Germany, and finally to New York, where he found a job in engineering. Malaniuk, with his ties to academia and many publications, is a little-known public thinker who has already discussed important issues that Ukrainians face today: how to showcase the Ukrainian nation to the world and how cultural politics affects people's well-being. He presented his ideas about culture in poetry in the books "The Stiletto and the Stylus" (1925) and "The Power" (1951). Здобувши на батьківщині добру технічну освіту, під час Другої світової війни він приєднався до оунівського запілля на Дніпропетровщині й потрапив спершу в нацистський концтабір, а по війні — вже у табір переміщених осіб і зрештою дістався Америки. Книжка містить два окремі мемуарні тексти: «Спомини» («Від села Подобна до концтабору Бухенвальд») і «ДіПі. Табір Корнберґ» (розділ ґрунтується на щоденникових записах автора і нотатках його таборового приятеля Костя Степового, що їх Харченко залучив ув оповідь). У прилозі опубліковано добірку архівних світлин та документів і післямову публікаторки Стефанії Харченко «Татова книжка».Важко сказати, що в цих спогадах важливіше: насичена деталями приватна історія чи докладне змалювання драматичної «картини доби», де знайшли відбиток Перша світова війна (на ній загинув батько Юхима Харченка), селянський побут доби непу і коренізації, колективізація та голод 1932–1933 років, індустріялізація, початок Другої світової, німецький полон, примусова праця в Бухенвальді, повоєнне життя в діпівському таборі Кронберґ (там Харченко став одним із керівників самоврядування). Подальші події, як-от виїзд до Штатів і життя у новому світі, згадано лише побіжно, в контексті тривалого постання самих мемуарів. Цікаво, що до Кронберґа оповідь зосереджено на особистому (поминаючи розлогий відступ про історію українського руху і конфлікт між бандерівцями та мельниківцями, в якому Юхим Харченко завжди тримається на боці «своєї партії» – ОУН-Р), а в частині про табір Ді-Пі фокус зміщується на загальніший обрис.Якщо не знати, що Харченко спирався на щоденникові нотатки, готуючи спогади, можна щиро здивуватися його неймовірній пам’яті на факти й імена: односельців і однокласників, викладачів, випадкових знайомців. У розквіті життя, сягнувши 33 років, він перебирає адміністрування табору Ді-Пі, «республіки Україна в мініятюрі» — цієї «моделі Самостійної України», яку у вересні 1947 року замешкувало 2700 людей. Хроніка таборового життя здебільшого по-інженерському суха, зі спорадичними вкрапленнями кумедних чи трагічних історій. Щоденниковий текст складено з маленьких фраґментів на кшталт «Населення табору», «Українська управа табору», «Церкви», «Школи», «Таборова преса», «Музична школа», «Аматорський театральний гурток». Велика українська громада-республіка, попри зовнішній контроль міжнародних організацій, фактичну ізольованість і радше обмежені можливості для приватних ініціятив, намагалася налагодити «нормальний» побут зі школами й дитячими садками, часописами і театром, лікарнями, їдальнями, ремісничими майстернями та церквами різних конфесій. Перш ніж 28 квітня 1949 року табір було закрито, «до Бельґії еміґрувало 400 осіб, до Канади 387, до США 155, до Франції 16, до Нової Зеляндії 1. Венесуеля – 16 осіб, Бразилія – 21, Мароко – 10, Англія – 9, Австралія – 235». Які країни і на яких умовах запрошували українців – окрема цікава тема записок.Від 1992 року Юхим Харченко впродовж чотирьох років надиктовував спогади на диктофон, а його донька Стефанія — відома нью-йоркська мисткиня — перетворювала їх на друкований текст. Загалом же знадобилося 32 роки, щоби книжка врешті побачила світ. Літературне опрацювання та редаґування ориґіналу, яким опікувався Вадим Дивнич, здійснено з межовою увагою до властивостей авторського правопису, стилістики і слововжитку, зокрема, до написання імен, топонімів, етнонімів, ергонімів тощо.Усі вміщені у книжці документи й знімки, крім тих, для яких зазначено інше джерело, походять із архіву Наукового Товариства імені Шевченка в Америці, з фонду Юхима Харченка (Juchym Charczenko.
