April 27, 2024Pre-Launch reading from “The God of Freedom” and conversation with Yuliya Musakovska.Yuliya Musakovska celebrated the upcoming release of her poetry collection, The God of Freedom, in English translation from Arrowsmith Press with cover art by Anastasiia Starko.She was joined by her translator Olena Jennings. The event featured a reading in both Ukrainian and English. Today marks the 38th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. An estimated 10 million people were exposed to the initial plume of radioactivity across Europe. Thousands of children have been born since with life altering disabilities, and cancer rates have spiked dramatically. The radioactive isotope cesium-137 around Chernobyl will take another 175 years to reach its half life, while plutonium-239 (which was found as far away as Sweden) will take 24,000 years to decay. This event will resonate for millennia but is a reminder for all of humanity to improve our behavior regardless of politics. NTSh-A also remembers and honors those suffering in Kazakhstan from the Semipalatinsk Test Site where 456 nuclear bombs were detonated near inhabited villages until the fall of the USSR.
