NEW YORK: The Shevchenko Scientific Society invites its members to participate in the Society’s Annual Meeting with Reports, which is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Preceding the meeting will be lunch at 12:00 n. followed by meetings of the Scholarly Sections, 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The meeting will take place at the Society’s building, 63 Fourth Ave. (between 9th and 10th streets). Yesterday, we launched the Ukrainian Music Initiative with the debut concert at Shevchenko Scientific Society, USA. It was a very pleasant and emotional evening. Our first program was entitled “Introductions”. We introduced ourselves, our mission and a variety of collaborations: voice and piano, cello and piano, four-hands piano and a not-so-common voice, cello and piano setting. We introduced rarely performed works by Ukrainian composers, including two living composers - Olga Zaitseva-Herz and Andrii Andy Didorenko. Also, each musician gave a spoken introduction to the pieces, which, in my opinion, brought a very personal touch to this whole experience. Thank you very much to everyone who attended. 25 січня 2025 р. в НТШ-А відбулася доповідь професора Київської школи економіки Володимира Кулика на тему: "Українське суспільство через три роки після початку повномасштабної війни".Доповідач, спираючись на соціологічні опитування, проведені під час війни, проаналізував тяглість та зміни серед різних категорій українських громадян щодо ідентифікації та мовних практик. Висновки, якими В. Кулик поділився з авдиторією, свідчать про значні зміни в українському суспільстві у ставленні до мовної проблеми та ідентифікації окремого громадянина.У дискусії брали участь - Перша віце-президентка НТШ-А, політологиня Олена Ніколаєнко та дійсний член НТШ-А, політолог Олександр Мотиль.Фото: Володимира ТкаченкаOn January 25, 2025, NTSh-A presented a lecture "Ukrainian Society Three Years Into the Full-Scale War" by Professor Volodymyr Kulyk, who teaches at the Kyiv School of Economics.Drawing on sociological surveys conducted during the war, Prof. Kulyk analyzed the continuity and changes among various categories of Ukrainian citizens regarding their identity and language practices. Introducing Our Member of the MonthSOLOMIYA IVAKHIV:"I value that our members care about promoting the Ukrainian language, Ukrainian music, and culture and introducing them to academic circles and audiences worldwide. I am a concert violinist, but as a Ukrainian, I feel it is my duty to promote Ukrainian music, which I started doing at a young age. Since 2011, when I became Artistic Director of the Music at the Institute Concert Series at the Ukrainian Institute of America, I programed over 160 Ukrainian composers on the Series. What is so important about it is that works by Ukrainian composers are performed along with Western composers, which brings up an important point: Ukrainian music belongs to the repertoire of world masterpieces and should not be excluded or singled out. Ukrainian music has its own place in the realm of classical music. I am also proud to say that my colleagues, who are amazing, well-respected musicians, perform Ukrainian music outside of the Ukrainian community, and they learned it for the initial performance at MATI.As the Head of Strings at the University of Connecticut, I also encourage students to learn Ukrainian music. Not only do they perform pieces written by Ukrainian composers, but they also advocate for Ukrainian music and Ukrainian culture. For example, my student Vincent Kaverud won first prize at the Ukrainian Music Competition and performed a piece by Myroslav Skoryk at Carnegie Hall. And my former student Jack Nighan took the initiative in helping librarians at Indiana University to change the spellings of Ukrainian composers from russian to Ukrainian. While studying at UConn, on numerous occasions, Jack heard from me about the injustice and how moscovian culture would censor Ukrainian artists and claim them as their own.
