The Shevchenko Scientific Society in the US held its General Meeting on December 18, 2021, at its headquarters in New York City. The meeting was streamed live on Zoom, allowing members to participate remotely if they could not attend in person; 57 members attended in person in NY, and 59 joined on Zoom.
During the meeting, the ballots were individually verified and then counted in full view by the Verification Committee. The Committee included the independent auditor Michael Getzel from accounting firm Getzel, Schiff, and Pesce, LLP, who supervised the vote count, VP and Treasurer Natalia Honcharenko, and observers from each of the two competing slates, Vasyl Lopukh and Oleh Kotsyuba.
The slate led by Halyna Hryn won the election with 77 of the 143 valid votes cast. The slate led by Alexander Motyl received 66 votes. At the time of the General Meeting, there were 198 voting members (Honorary, Full, and Corresponding members) in the Society. Dr. Hryn accepted her second term as president with short remarks of gratitude and a commitment to repair and strengthen the Society after a contentious campaign period.
