Grants Program 2018-2019

The Shevchenko Scientific Society in the United States of America will award grants during 2018-2019 in the following categories: Research Grants and Dissertation Research Grants.  There will be only one granting cycle during 2018-2019, with all grant applications for Research Grants and Dissertation Research Grants due on February 1, 2019. All grant applications and supportive documents must be submitted electronically in an online application platform.

Research Grants

The Shevchenko Scientific Society in the U.S.  will award grants in 2018-2019​ for research on a wide range of topics and issues related to Ukrainian Studies.  While priorities are given to projects in the humanities and social sciences, proposals for research in other fields and disciplines are welcome if they will make important contributions to Ukrainian Studies.

Eligibility limitations/requirements Research Grant awards are open to scholars of all countries, disciplines, and ethnicities.  All research proposals will be judged on their scholarly merits, on the demonstrated experience and abilities of the applicant to carry out the proposed research, and on the nature of the contribution of the project to advancing scholarship on Ukraine-related issues and in Ukrainian Studies.

Incomplete applications or applications received after the submission deadline will not be considered; applicants have the option to resubmit their updated applications in the next grant cycle.  Preference will be given to applications providing evidence of funds or application for funds ​for the project/activity from other sources.  If the applicant had a prior Research Grant from the Shevchenko Scientific Society, at least one year must pass after the completion of the grant before the applicant is eligible to apply for another grant.  In addition, a written final report about the grant must be submitted to the Grants Committee before another grant proposal can be considered.

Funding Limitations and Restrictions Research Grants are intended to primarily support the processes of research, analysis, and writing.  Awarded funds may be used to cover such research expenses as archival access; photocopying/duplication of research materials; supplies relevant to the research process; travel expenses related to research activities; meals and lodging during research trips away from one’s home; and general support expenses during periods of analysis and writing.

​ Individual grants are limited to a maximum amount of $5000, or $7,500 if there are two or more scholars supported by the grant.​

RESEARCH GRANT FUNDS CANNOT BE USED TO COVER COSTS OF PUBLICATION OF ARTICLES OR MONOGRAPHS, OF FOR EXPENSES RELATED TO PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPTS FOR PUBLICATION. THE SHEVCHENKO SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY HAS A SEPARATE PUBLICATIONS COMMITTEE WHICH REVIEWS SUBMITTED, COMPLETED MANUSCRIPTS PRIOR TO AWARDING GRANTS.

Required application materials and deadline for submission​

The following documents are required for application:

  • Curriculum vitae with selected publications and current research (if relevant)
  • Project essay identifying the objectives of the project, the scholarly context of the issue(s) addressed, the proposed research program​, the expected contributions of the project to your field and to Ukrainian Studies, and planned outcomes of the project (i.e. publications, exhibitions, etc.)
  • Detailed project schedule of work and project budget
  • At least 2 (no more than 3) letters of support for the applicant and the proposed research project

Only applications uploaded to the online application form must be received by the Shevchenko Scientific Society in the U.S.A. by February 1, 2019.  Final decisions will be made by June 2019 so that projects could commence as early as the summer or fall of 2019.

The online application form may be completed in English or Ukrainian.  All required documents and files should be scanned and labeled in the following manner before uploading to the application form:  Last name_First name_Document name (for example, Kotyk_Anna_Project Essay;  Kotyk_Anna_Support Letter 1; Kotyk_Anna_Work plan and budget, etc.).  Files should be saved in the following formats:  PDF, JPG, or text files (.doc or .docx).  It is recommended that you have all of the document files on hand in digital format before completing the application and uploading the files in a single sitting.

Dissertation Research Grants

Dissertation Research Grants

Grants are available for dissertation research projects on issues related to Ukraine and Ukrainian Studies.  Preference will we given to topics in the humanities and social sciences, but applications for research in other fields will be accepted and evaluated as to the relevance and importance of their contribution to Ukrainian Studies.

Eligibility limitations/requirements

Dissertation Research Grants are open to graduate students of all countries, disciplines, and ethnicities.  Applicants must be currently enrolled in universities or research institutes as aspiranty for Kandydat Nauk degrees or candidates in Ph.D. programs.  All proposals will be judged on their scholarly merits, on the nature of the contribution of the project to advancing scholarship on Ukraine-related issues and in Ukrainian Studies, and on the proven ability of the applicant to effectively execute the project.

Funding limitations and restrictions

The maximum amount of individual grant awards is $1000.  Eligible expenses include travel to research sites, lodging, costs of access to research materials, duplication costs, etc.  Funds awarded in support of dissertation research projects are not intended to cover general living expenses during the term of the project.

  • Essay identifying your dissertation topic; the scholarly context of the issue(s) addressed in your dissertation; a description of the research you propose to undertake, methods, theoretical underpinnings, etc., as well as a description of the sources/collections with which you propose to work; a discussion of how the research will advance your research objectives; anticipated contribution of your dissertation project.
  • Detailed schedule of the research process and project budget, listing anticipated expenses.
  • At least 2 (no more than 3) letters of support which address the importance and relevance of the applicant’s research project and the applicant’s ability to complete the research and dissertation.
