SUMMARY:Winter Poems |
\nРеєстрація: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_8RivQadCRAmmkx13hxXtlg \nWinter Poems\nThe Shevchenko Society presents a poetry reading with Oksana Lutsyshyna\, Mariana Savka\, Serhiy Zhadan\, and Vasyl Makhno. \nModerated by Vitaly Chernetsky\, Associate Professor\, Slavic Languages & Literatures\, University of Kansas; Learned Secretary\, Shevchenko Scientific Society of America. \nPoetry exists\, is written\, and is read irrespective of changing seasons\, but during wintertime\, close to Christmas\, poems speak to us is a special way—perhaps through the whiteness of snow\, or the smell of spruce and pine needles\, or through Christmas pageantry. New Year and Christmas details do not exhaust wintertime themes—they also comprise the sense of time slowing down\, of reflection\, of reviewing things past and hope for the future. It is poetry that brings back to us the feelings of the depth of language\, of the beauty of sharp thought\, of harmonious communication with the world. For poets who will read their work\, their personal take on time and its dimensions develops on the molecular level of poetic imagery; out of its details emerges the singular realm of each poem\, its energy and emotional charge. \nThe event will take place primarily in Ukrainian\, with select poems read in English translation. An interpreter will be available to translate during the Q&A for those less comfortable speaking Ukrainian. \nRegister here to join the webinar. \nThe event will also be streamed live on our Facebook page. SUMMARY:Gathering the Fragments of the Hidden Soul: The Discovery and Collaborative Treatment of the Early Work of Mykola Bazhan
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe bilingual Ukrainian-English collection Quiet Spiders of the Hidden Soul: Mykola (Nik) Bazhan’s Early Experimental Poetry (Academic Studies Press\, 2020) brings together the most interesting experimental works by Mykola (Nik) Bazhan\, one of the major Ukrainian poets of the 20th century. An ardent Modernist\, Bazhan was known for his idiosyncratic style and unique vocabulary. After Stalinist rule forced the poet into the straightjacket of officially sanctioned Socialist Realism\, his early texts have been dismissed as both irrelevant and subversive. Many poems from Bazhan’s three remarkable early collections (1926\, 1927\, and 1929) remain unknown to readers\, both in Ukraine and the West. The publication for the first time makes these outstanding works available. \nMore than fifteen translators and writers joined forces for this massive project\, presenting a diverse set of translation techniques and approaches to collaboratively tackle this challenging corpus. \nPlease click the link below to join the webinar: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81874289915?pwd=Nys3Z1NXRENPOVNqU0N0cm9GWFV5Zz09

SUMMARY:Special Virtual Book Discussion by Serhii Plokhy
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nThe \n  \nUkrainian Institute of America in collaboration with Shevchenko Scientific Society and Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Sciences \nare delighted to invite you to a special virtual book discussion by \nSerhii Plokhy \nMykhailo Hrushevsky Professor of History and director of the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University \nForgotten Bastards of the Eastern Front: American Airmen Behind the Soviet Lines and the Collapse of the Grand Alliance  \nWe will be presenting this event virtually\, using Zoom. RSVP here \nIn November 1943\, with the outcome of the Second World War hanging in the balance\, the Allies needed a new plan. The Americans’ audacious suggestion to the Soviets was to open a second air front\, with the US Air Force establishing bases in Soviet-controlled territory. Despite Stalin’s obvious reservations about the presence of foreign troops in Russia\, he was persuaded. Operation Baseball and then Frantic were initiated in early 1944 as B-17 Superfortresses were flown from bases in Italy to the Poltava region in today’s Ukraine. \nAward-winning historian Serhii Plokhy tells the gripping\, little-known story of this encounter between American and Soviet soldiers and how their collaboration quickly fell apart\, mirroring the transition from the Grand Alliance to the Cold War. Soviet secret policemen watched over the Americans\, shadowing their every move. A catastrophic air raid by the Germans revealed the limitations of Soviet air defenses. As their initial enthusiasm turned into disappointment\, the American soldiers started calling themselves the Forgotten Bastards of Ukraine. Ultimately\, no common purpose could overcome their cultural and political differences. \nDrawing on newly opened Russian archives as well as CIA records\, Forgotten Bastards of the Eastern Front offers a riveting bottom-up history of one of the Second World War’s most unlikely alliances.

SUMMARY:Lecture “Beggars in the Ruthenian Cities of the Crown of Poland from the 14th Century to the First Half of the 17th Century"
DESCRIPTION:The history of beggars is poorly covered by written sources; they are usually represented only in the documents of repressive institutions. Beggars’ communities were divided into two categories: recognized and not recognized by municipal authorities. The first group was controlled and taxed while the second one was evicted from towns. Although both groups were “othered” by burghers\, the legalized beggars were an integral part of urban society because accepting alms\, they gave a chance for salvation to those who helped them. The attitude towards beggars evolved. The first change occurred in the 14th century when\, according to Jacques Le Goff\, the Middle Ages became “the world of homebodies” and the spirit of the Crusades declined. The next stage in the evolution of the attitudes towards beggars occurred in the 16th century when the Protestant ethic began to spread. The Sejm constitutions of the Kingdom of Poland\, like the government regulations in other countries of the late Middle Ages\, regulated society’s attitude towards beggars\, tried to protect the towns from their negative impact and imposed taxes on them. But the result was not significant.

SUMMARY:Lecture “Ukrainian Civil Internees in the Polish Camps of Internment\, 1918-1921”
DESCRIPTION:Just after the outbreak of the Polish-Ukrainian war in November 1918\, Polish authorities started arresting specific persons from the Ukrainian society. Among them were mainly people who took part in the building of administrative structures of West Ukrainian People’s Republic or were hostile toward the Polish state. Internments lasted through the end of 1919\, although some persons were arrested and sent to the camps in 1920 and 1921. Ukrainians were held in a few prisoners-of-war camps\, such as Dąbie near Cracow\, Wadowice\, Strzałków\, Modlin\, Dęblin\, or in the camps located inside the fortress of Brześć Litewski. Many prisoners were behind the barbed wire for a long time\, usually a few months. It was quite a large group\, consisting of some 20\, 000 people.

SUMMARY:Dr. Anna Procyk's presentation of her book "Giuseppe Mazzini’s Young Europe and the Birth of Modern Nationalism in the Slavic World"
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThe Shevchenko Scientific Society\, the Ukrainian Institute of America and the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Sciences invite all to a presentation by Anna Procyk of her book Giuseppe Mazzini’s Young Europe and the Birth of Modern Nationalism in the Slavic World (University of Toronto Press\, 2019).  The work examines the intellectual currents in Eastern Europe that attracted educated youth after the Polish Revolution of 1830. Focusing on the political ideas brought to the Slavic world from the West by Polish émigré conspirators\, Anna Procyk explores the core message that the Polish revolutionaries carried\, a message based on the democratic principles espoused by Young Europe’s founder\, Giuseppe Mazzini.  The documentary sources used in this study testify that at its inception the political nationalism in Eastern Europe was republican-democratic in nature and that the clandestine groups in Eastern Europe were closely cooperating with one another through underground channels.  It was through this cooperation that the better-educated Poles and Ukrainians in the political underground became aware that the interests of their nations\, bound together by the forces of history and political necessity\, were best served when they worked closely together.

SUMMARY:Lecture “Renewable Energy in Ukraine and Worldwide: A Comparative Analysis”
DESCRIPTION:The lecture provides an economic analysis of the evolution and prerequisites for renewable energy development worldwide with a focus on reducing the cost of energy from renewable energy sources\, the dynamics of investment in the industry and the economic stimulation of green energy facilities deployment. The author summarizes the results of renewable energy development in the world by solar\, wind\, hydro\, geothermal and bioenergy sectors\, as well as the impact of the industry on employment growth. In addition\, the outcomes of the green energy deployment in Ukraine are compared with the world achievements. On this basis\, objective and subjective reasons that impede the extension of renewable energy technologies worldwide are identified\, as well as additional barriers specific to Ukrainian reality. Regarding the reasons outlined above\, the author provides recommendations for governments to improve national policies in this area. Considering the economic and political situation in Ukraine\, additional economic mechanisms have been developed\, the use of which will stimulate green energy growth in the country

SUMMARY:Lecture “Exhibiting Trauma: Memorialization of the Holodomor in Ukrainian Museums”
DESCRIPTION:This presentation analyzes how the Holodomor is presented in Ukrainian museums and exhibition projects. It examines exhibitions in national\, state and local history museums\, discussing the main memory actors\, narratives\, and perception of each museum’s memory policy regarding the Holodomor. Special attention is paid to the evolution of the state-controlled narrative which ranges from trauma\, loss and tragedy to an emphasis on resisting\, opposing and overcoming the communist regime. In summary\, the presentation details the role of museums portraying the Holodomor in comparison with other practices of commemoration\, emphasizing the exclusive mission of museumification in creating the State’s grand narrative about the Ukrainian famine of 1932-1933.

SUMMARY:Lecture “The Chungul Kurgan Grave Goods in the Black Sea Steppe of the Thirteenth Century”
DESCRIPTION:This presentation interprets as trophies many of the grave goods excavated from the burial of a steppe leader  –  likely a Polovtsian ‘prince’  –  within the Chungul Kurgan in the steppes of southern Ukraine. Written sources about the culture of the Eurasian steppe of the 11th-13th centuries CE\, comparative study of items in European collections\, and the archaeological details of the exact manner of deposition have allowed the reconstruction of the meanings of these finds in daily life\, and in the burial ritual. The grave goods allow us to propose a possible identity for the deceased\, and his activities in the early 13th century

SUMMARY:Presentation of the book “The Case of Vasyl Stus”
DESCRIPTION:Vakhtang Kipiani’s book “The Case of Vasyl Stus\,” (Vivat Publishing Ltd.\, Ukraine)\, the poet’s criminal case documents\, presently reside at the SBU Archives in Kyiv. The dissident-poet\, writer and  journalist\, Vasyl Stus (1938-1985)\, was constantly persecuted for his defense of human rights\, opposition to Russification and anti-Ukrainian policies in general. His writings were forbidden in Ukraine and were published only abroad. Vasyl Stus remains one of Europe’s most distinguished poets of the 20th century. Mr. Kipiani will include discussions of circumstances and reasons for Stus’ arrest\, as well as who his friends and enemies turned out to be during the criminal proceedings. Vakhtang Kipiani\, a Ukrainian journalist\, historian\, and founder of the Museum-Archives of the Ukrainian Press in Kyiv\, was also Editor-in-Chief of the online “Istorychna Pravda” on ZIK TV. However\, in June 2019\, as Viktor Medvedchuk became owner of the TV station\, Mr. Kipiani resigned\, along with several other leading journalists at ZIK.

SUMMARY:Yuriy Tarnawsky Presents his Novels: “Warm Arctic Nights” and “The Iguanas of Heat”
DESCRIPTION:The author will read excerpts from both novels. “Warm Arctic Nights” is probably the only literary work that\, from a child’s point of view\, describes the fate of Ukrainians in the pre-WWII Poland\, the WWII German-occupation years in Ukraine\, and finally their migration to the West. In “The Iguanas of Heat\,” a woman possessed by an inexplicable hatred for her husband\, plans his death on their forthcoming trip to Mexico. Yuriy Tarnawsky is an author of some three dozen books of poetry\, fiction\, drama\, essays\, translations\, and a linguist as well. To quote Alain Arias-Misson\, “His writing has that ever rarer quality of a poetic language\, the intensity and purity of which render his stories unforgettable.”

SUMMARY:Lecture “Echolocation Techniques of Bats and Blind Humans Can Improve Robot Sensing”
DESCRIPTION:Sonar (SOund NAvigation and Ranging) is a sensing modality that extracts environmental features from echoes. Conventional sonars detect only the first echo to give the range of the nearest reflector. Biomimetic sonars apply techniques employed by bats to extract additional information. This talk describes echo processing that produces cognitive maps similar to those formed through echolocation by blind humans.
