Нью-Йорк, Н. Й. Наукове Товариство ім. Шевченка в Америці та Український Інститут Америки запрошують українську громаду та всіх зацікавлених на урочистий вечір – презентацію нових публікацій та музичної програми з нагоди святкування 200-літнього ювілею Тараса Шевченка, що відбудеться 9 листопада о 7 годині вечора в приміщенні Українського Інституту Америки на 2 Е. 79 вулиця в Нью-Йорку.
Для українців Тарас Шевченко (1814-1861) – національний поет, “пророк” та ікона української культури. 200-ліття з дня його народження являє собою надзвичайну нагоду для української діяспори відкрити наново свої духовні корені і відновити зв’язок з українством – із усімa, за словами поета, живими, мертвими і ще ненародженими земляками. Наукове Товариство ім. Шевченка в Америці вшановує свого патрона Ювілейним Проєктом, який включає публікацію низки книжок, дві з яких презенуватимуться на цьому інавґураційному відкритті шевченківського року: перше в історії факсимільне видання Шевченкової поеми Гайдамаки з 1841 року, разом із двома супровідними монографіями, і перший том двотомного видання Шевченко в критиці, що охоплює усю друковану прижиттєву критику разом із вичерпним коментарем і науковим апаратом.
Професор Григорій Грабович, Президент Наукового Товариства ім. Шевченка в Америці, автор монографії про Шевченкові Гайдамаки та редактор праці Шевченко в критиці , зазначає, що вони становлять для нього кульмінацію десятилітньої праці дослідження Шевченка, його символічного, мітичного та архетипного пластів, і його рецепції – зокрема в українській літературі, але також у інших – передусім у російській і польській.
Музична програма складатиметься з виконання фортепіянових творів відомим піяністом Павлом Ґінтовим, стипендіянтом НТШ. Пан Ґінтов розповідає: “Для мене велика честь брати участь у святкуваннi Ювілею Тараса Шевченка, постаті, значення якоï неможливо перебiльшити. Важко уявити яку-небудь галузь украïнського мистецтва, на розвиток якоï не вплинула б творчiсть Шевченка. I музика також не вийняток. У ‘Шевченкiвськiй сюïтi’ Бориса Лятошинського, яку я виконуватиму, кожна її частина пов’язана з окремими цитатами з ‘Кобзаря.’ Ця музика—своєрiдний коментар композитора, який надає можливiсть побачити i вiдчути знайомi нам усiм з дитинства Шевченкові рядки по-новому. Окрiм сюïти Лятошинського я запропоную слухачам твори Iгоря Шамо i Мирослава Скорика.”
Після культурної програми відбудеться прийняття з вином та закускою, яке приготує відомий в Нью-Йорку український ресторан «Веселка».

New York, N.Y. As part of the inauguration of the forthcoming celebration of the two-hundredth anniversary of the birth of Taras Shevchenko, the national poet of Ukraine, the Shevchenko Scientific Society with the support of the Ukrainian Institute of America is presenting a festive evening with a book launch and piano recital devoted to its Patron. The celebration will take place on November 9, 2013, at 7 pm at the magnificent home of the Ukrainian Institute of America located at 2 East 79th Street in New York City.
The program will consist of the following:
• Welcome remarks by Kathy Nalywajko, First Vice-President of the Ukrainian Institute of America
• Greeting from His Excellency Yuriy A. Sergeyev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations
• Greeting from Dr. Anna Procyk, Learned Secretary of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Sciences in the U.S.
• Keynote address by the preeminent Shevchenko scholar George G. Grabowicz, Dmytro Čyževs´kyj Professor of Ukrainian Literature at Harvard University and President of the Society
• Presentation of two new publications prepared by the Society especially for the Bicentennial:
— the three-volume edition of Shevchenko’s Haidamaky that includes a facsimile of the original 1841 edition, Oles Fedoruk’s historical account The Making of the Book, and George G. Grabowicz’s literary study The Poem and Its Critical Reception.
— the first volume of the magisterial collection Taras Shevchenko: The Critical Reception (1839–1861) encompassing all published references to Shevchenko during his lifetime and in year of his death.
• Solo musical performance of works that resonate with Shevchenko’s oeuvre by the award-winning pianist and Shevchenko Scientific Society grant recipient Pavlo Gintov.
Taras Shevchenko (1814–1861) is for all Ukrainians the national poet and an icon of Ukrainian culture. His bicentennial is a major opportunity for the Ukrainian diaspora community to re-experience its spiritual roots and to bond with all Ukrainians, those who are, in the poet’s words, “living, dead, or still unborn.”
Shevchenko’s book-length poem Haidamaky (1841), one of his major works, is being published for the first time in a facsimile edition together with two accompanying monographs. The first volume of the two-volume edition Taras Shevchenko: The Critical Reception collects and annotates the massive critical response to Shevchenko as both poet and painter. Speaking of the project, Professor Grabowicz notes that for him “this is a culmination of a decades-long interest in the poet, in his use of symbolism and the language of myth and archetype, as well as in Shevchenko’s reception, primarily in Ukrainian literature, but also in other literatures, particularly the Russian and
the Polish.”
Described as “a poet of the keyboard” and a “musical storyteller,” concert pianist Pavlo Gintov has appeared on such stages as Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, Teatro Verdi Nationale in Milan, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, and the Kioi Hall in Tokyo. In a recent interview he stated, “It is a great honor for me to participate in the celebration of Taras Shevchenko’s 200th anniversary. In my program I will perform works by three distinguished Ukrainian composers—the Shevchenko Suite by Borys Lyatoshynsky, a work in which each movement represents the composer’s reflection on lines from Shevchenko’s Kobzar; two ‘musical paintings’ by Ihor Shamo, ‘Summer Evening’ and ‘Volodymyrka’; and as the grand finale Myroslav Skoryk’s fiery ‘Burlesque,’ an audience favorite among modern piano works.”
The cultural program will conclude with a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception catered by the popular Ukrainian restaurant Veselka. All presented books will be available for purchase by the audience at a discounted price and will make a wonderful and memorable gift for the fast approaching Christmas season.
